A Message From the Mayor

I served on the City Council for three years before being appointed Mayor in October 2006. In November, 2007 and again in November 2011, the citizens elected me to serve a full terms as Mayor.  It is important that I represent all of the people of Algona. My administration has a resident first approach to serving the residents of Algona.

While Mayor, I have pursued professional courses for myself, Department Directors and staff.  This is at all levels and all departments.  I believe that it is important to have the best qualified staff providing services to the Residents of Algona.  Although Algona is a small urban city, it has the same needs and demands of much larger cities.

I am very proud of the accomplishments we have made in the last few years and look forward to accomplishing more in the next few years. The City Council, Planning Commission, Board Members, Volunteers, City Staff and I have worked hard to become more efficient, accountable, and responsive to the priorities of our citizens. I want to commend the work of our Department Directors and employees for their continuing efforts to make Algona even better!  Algona is lucky to have hard working dedicated staff that share the resident first attitude and strive to make Algona the “Best Small City in Western Washington”!

As Algona’s Mayor, I work for the residents.  My goal is to offer our residents the highest quality city services, which enhance and expand the benefits of living in Algona.  I believe that we share the best benefits of living in Algona.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Dave Hill

Achievements as Mayor

  • Co-founded the Town Crier monthly newsletter with Mayor Joe Scholz to better inform the residents. The Town Crier is included in monthly utility bill and mailed to others on request.
  • Updated the City Website to provide information and access to the many services provided to our residents. It has information on City meetings and events.
  • The government access channel (Comcast cable channel 21) is up and running with information on City activities as well as other important information.
  • Authored a “3 touch rule” and enhanced notification requirements to make sure that residents are informed before important changes are made in the City.

Cost Controls Implemented:

  • Contracted  building and planning services to City of Auburn to reduce costs and improve level of service and expertise.  This change as resulted in substantial savings while providing Algona with certified, experienced professionals.
  • Installing remote read water meters that can read all of the meters in less than an hour.  This task alone took three Public Works staff several days to complete with old system.

Parks and Public Events:

  • Used a grant for $97,000 to create a new Sports Court at Matchett Park. This includes a basketball court, tennis court and two four square courts. These features are used daily by citizens of all ages.
  • Added new events and continued providing traditional events. We now have the Easter Egg Hunt, Algona Days, Movies in the Park, Music in the Park and Holiday Social .  We are planning more events and activities in the future.
  • When a developer wanted to vacate a street that is important to our storm water system, Dave worked out a compromise that will allow Algona to have a neighborhood park.  The developer conveyed the ownership of the property to the city and the property is currently being developing into a Tot Park.
  • Acquired a property that is wetlands, using grants from King Conservation District, King County(Council Member Pete von Reichbauer) and WRIA 9 to fund the purchase and an initial study of the wetlands.  This property will preserve a historical wetlands for generations.
